Mad Hatter Xmas tree decoration

Description

Christmas tree decoration in the shape of a Mad Hatter hat, as titled. ^_^

I got the directions for making these here:
[link]

Changes I made to what that article says to do:

1. I used watercolor paper, not cereal boxes. Because I wanted to hand-paint it, whereas the directions in that link are for how to cover a cardboard base with decorative paper.

2. The directions call for Elmer's glue or glue sticks. I used a hot glue gun. Because I can't be bothered to weigh crap down and wait for it to dry for hours before I can work with it. :P

3. This is one my sister came up with, but is really helpful -- make some cardboard-paper tabs and glue or tape them on the inside of the hat bit to give the top and brim more surface area to attach to... it's much easier to put the pieces together that way.

4. You can't tell from the photo, but instead of the original instructions for how to make a hanger hook, I just took a short piece of pipe cleaner, coiled one end into a spiral, glued it to the top of the hat, and bent the rest into a hook.

My sister made one that she covered in fabric instead of decorative paper, then cut up a playing card to make a flower and hot-glued an old watch face in the center of it, and added to the brim a model skull she had lying around. It's all... goth-steampunktastic.

Basically, the instructions behind that link are really good ones that can be modified to let you make some really FABULOUS things.

Two tips:

1. Dressmaker pins are a REALLY great thing to have if you want to make the hatpin things.

2. Use a nail file to smooth the edges of everything after you cut it out. Super-effective, makes it look really tidy and professional-like. ^_^
